Inspired by the spirituality of the Sacred Heart, he became the co-founder of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus together with St. Teresa Verzeri.
His life remains a shining example of holiness, charity, and faithful service to God and His people.
Early Life and Vocation
Giuseppe Benaglio was born on November 22, 1767, in Bergamo, Italy, into one of the city’s noble and respected families. From a young age, he showed great intelligence, a cheerful spirit, and a deep love for God.
At the age of twenty-two, he was ordained a priest in September 1790. Soon after, he was appointed Canon of the Cathedral Chapter of Bergamo, where he formed close friendships with distinguished men of virtue and learning.
A Man of Prayer and Wisdom
Monsignor Benaglio was known for his joyful and friendly nature. Though he loved silence and solitude, his solitude was filled with prayer, study, writing, and reflection. In prayer, he nourished his deep relationship with God and drew strength for his ministry.
He was widely respected for his profound knowledge, wisdom, and dedication to the Church. Throughout his life, he served the Diocese of Bergamo in many important roles, including Rector of the Seminary, Vicar General, theologian, jurist, confessor, spiritual director, and guide to religious communities.
Spiritual Director and Guide
As a spiritual director, Monsignor Benaglio was admired for his gentleness, compassion, and fatherly care. He guided many souls with patience and wisdom, helping them grow in holiness and trust in God.
Together with Canon Marco Celio Passi, he also accompanied Maria Antonia Grumelli, the mystic reformer of the Monastery of Santa Chiara in Bergamo and founder of the Apostolic College. Through these spiritual relationships, he became deeply rooted in the spirituality of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
His letters reveal a man filled with kindness, simplicity, and warm affection. While firm in spiritual guidance, he also related to others with humor, tenderness, and genuine concern.
Co-Founder of the Congregation
Inspired by the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and desiring to spread its spirit throughout the world, Monsignor Benaglio joined St. Teresa Verzeri in founding the Congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on February 8, 1831, in Bergamo.
He encouraged the sisters to become filled with the spirit of the Heart of Jesus — to think, love, serve, and suffer like Christ. His spiritual teachings helped shape the identity and charism of the Congregation.
He taught: “You must think like Him, love like Him, suffer like Him, be humble, sweet, meek, compassionate and loving like Him.”
Final Years and Legacy
Monsignor Joseph Benaglio spent his life in faithful service to God, the Church, and the spiritual growth of souls. Through his wisdom, holiness, and guidance, he left a lasting spiritual heritage within the Congregation and the Diocese of Bergamo. He passed into eternal life on January 18, 1836.
Today, the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus continue to treasure his teachings and example, drawing inspiration from his deep devotion to the Sacred Heart and his loving service to others. His life continues to remind us that true greatness is found in humility, prayer, charity, and complete dedication to the will of God.
